Seeking a programmer to join our team!

Our team of diverse, collaborative computational biologists is seeking a programmer/web developer to implement and deploy web-based tools for the prediction of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) based on bacterial genome sequence data.

The successful applicant will have significant experience with programming in languages such as Python, R and Java, and with web development, including JavaScript  and various frameworks. Familiarity with bioinformatics (in particular, Bioconda), next-generation sequencing data, and microbiology is also an asset. The ability to work collaboratively is also essential. A BSc is required, and an MSc is an asset but not required.

Our Genome Canada-funded project aims to develop and benchmark machine-learning models to predict AMR in a variety of clinically-relevant bacterial pathogens. In addition to accuracy and specificity, we aim to make interpretable models to help clinicians in their decisions on which antibiotics to prescribe. The candidate will gain experience with deep learning and other artificial intelligence methods, and co-author scientific papers.

Our team is led by Drs. Maxwell Libbrecht and Leonid Chindelevitch, professors of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, and Dr. Jesse Shapiro at the McGill University Genome Centre. Our team also includes several graduate students and postdocs working on developing models, which will be the basis for user-friendly online tools. The successful candidate will be based at the McGill Genome Centre, but will work closely (remotely) with collaborators at SFU.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. We are aiming to fill the position by September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible.
